CAMP DIRECTOR
Responsible to: Camp BAR-V-NOK Society Board of Directors
Summer Contract Salary: $4200 ($300 bonus when final report and staff/parent feedback survey submitted to the Camp BAR-V-NOK Board Director of Programming)
At Home Remote Work: May 24th - June 30th
Onsite: July 1st - 23rd
Qualifications:
Minimum age of 21
A degree study in a relevant field or at least same number of years post high school
A minimum 2 years camp experience in a leadership position
Superior leadership, organization, and communication skills
Ability to be fluent in Ukrainian is a asset
Camp BAR-V-NOK strives to promote Orthodox Christian spirituality, as a place where: “Faith, culture, and nature come together.” In light of this mission, it is the task of the camp to serve as an example of the life in Christ. The pursuit of all camp activities goes hand in hand with spiritual effort and an active life within the community of the Camp. Each staff member, as a member of this community, is held to a moral standard to comply with the patterns of behaviour traditionally expected by the Orthodox Church of those striving to live their life accordingly. As a result, staff will fully participate in morning and evening prayers, prayers before and after meals and celebrate the liturgical cycle of the Orthodox Church on designated days to the very best of their ability.
The camp director is responsible for the daily operation of camp and the safety and well-being of all campers, volunteers, and staff members. They take direction from the Camp BAR-V-NOK Society Board of Directors in order to realize the mission of Camp. The director leads the staff and is responsible for initial and on-going training and mentoring. They work alongside other staff in the planning and facilitating of general camp activities. The director will work as an administrator to resolve any camper or staff issues that arise.
All summer staff members are ultimately accountable to the Camp BAR-V-NOK Board of Directors. The director is responsible for all on-site camp staff.
Prior to start of summer, the director will:
Will meet with the program committee to be briefed on camp policies and procedures
Will assist the Board in organizing and leading a staff camp orientation in early June. The purpose of this weekend is to introduce staff to Camp BAR-V-NOK culture, outline expectations for the summer, and develop effective team relationships
Will communicate with the cook to ensure food orders are in place and adhere to budget and nutritional requirements, and address any concerns
Will work with the staff to plan weekly and daily themes and activities
Will contact guest speakers and visiting instructors connected to programming plans
Notify the Board Director of Programming of any purchases required for programming activities
During Setup and Staff Training the director will:
Supervise the setup of summer camp
Ensure staff receive proper training in emergency procedures, planning and leading programs; working with campers of a variety of ages and abilities; abuse and disclosure policies; COVID19 policies and procedures. Guidance will be provided by the Camp BAR-V-NOK Society Board.
During the summer the director will:
Be an active participant in on faith based activities in accordance with the Orthodox Church at camp and ensure all staff are present and participating.
Monitor and ensure adherence to all public health and safety protocols and camp policies related to COVID-19
Work with the registrar to manage camper lists and information
Work with the facility manager to handle necessary maintenance
Ensure staff work effectively to fulfill their duties
Provide evaluative feedback to staff on a regular basis
Address any parental concerns or complaints that may arise
Complete necessary paperwork for all critical incidents, injuries, and departures
Provide updates to the Board of Directors
Maintain staff morale
Address any staffing issues
Address significant camper issues, making the decision to contact parents or send a child home (this will be in consultation with representatives from the board)
Resolve any issues that hinder the daily operation of camp •
Delegate responsibilities to other staff members as needed •
Oversee general summer camp program
Approve related staff expenses
Work with head cook to adapt menu to accommodate camp themes and activities
